Pushing the Boundaries – Liam Kearney

Pushing the boundaries can be a scary thing from my experience.

Not scary as in terrifying but scary as in uncomfortable.

Knowing what I have to do and doing it are two different things but I am starting to see that it is tremendously satisfying every time that I do something that I know I need to do but don’t really want to do.

When I want to do something new something generally crops up to make me ask myself if I really want to do this.

Some of my more recent examples are around the Landmark Forum advanced course and signing up for an ultra marathon.

The Landmark Forum Advanced Course:

I did the landmark forum at the end of February this year and found it mind blowing in the good sense. I absolutely loved it and am thoroughly enjoying the seminar series for the last 9-10 weeks.

I had signed up to do the advanced course in Dublin in September and was really looking forward to it but lately I had been getting quite frustrated as I wanted to do it sooner than that. I knew that it was on in London in June and had been looking in to it to see if I could change to do it then.

There was no problem with transferring to the course next month but immediately I started coming up with all these excuses and reasons for why I should not do it.

  • It will be more expensive
  • I can’t really afford it
  • It’s a waste of money
  • I’d have to pay for flights
  • I’d have to get time off work
  • I’d be using holiday time for a course
  • I’d be putting out friends by asking to stay with them or it will cost more for accomodation

All of these things came up.

The other thing around my fitness was that I did not have a goal and had not signed up or committed to anything so therefore I was not very enthusiastic about training for anything.

So Saturday came around and I decided that I needed to commit to these things to actually make progress towards what I want to do but I was still uncomfortable around it.

So what happened?

Well I just signed up for them anyway. I am doing the Longford Ultra Marathon in August on the 24th and I am flying to London on the 19th June for the Landmark Advanced course.

When I push the boundaries, I do not enjoy it at the time but I do realise that it is necessary to get me where I want to go.

You get to choose whether you listen to those doubts or whether you just take action anyway.

I’m really looking forward to the Landmark advanced course and the ultra marathon.

It’s time to start some traianing.

Liam Kearneys mind blowing experience at the landmark forum

How Did the Landmark Forum Go

Wow….well what can I say really…Mind blowing!

It was an unbelievable weekend and I loved it!

I didn’t know what to expect and I can’t explain it now. If you get a chance to go…take it….your life will never be the same again!

I went in to a room full of strangers on Friday and have spent 39 hours with everyone over 3 days and I would not change it for all the tea in China.

A few years ago, life had lost it gloss and I was unhappy. I was working 24 hours a day and completely exhausted and had no idea what was wrong.

There was no meaning…I was just chasing the next thing and when I got it I was like a kid with a new toy…..really excited for all of 5 minutes and then bored and looking for something else.

I knew there was something missing and I have been looking for ‘it’ for quite a while.

Something really special happens when you put a group of people together that are all looking for the same thing. It’s hard to explain but it is magical.

I see things in a new light now and will not be able to go back to the way things were before even if I wanted to.

If you get a chance to go on one….check it out!

Thanks Gale, you are a superstar!

Do something today that scares you blog by liam kearney

Are You Scared

If you are not then you are probably not pushing yourself

I used to think that the idea was to get to a point where you are very comfortable doing whatever it is that you do

Boy was I wrong. If you are not working towards something that scares you then you are stuck in your comfort zone.

I’m a bit scared about the event I am attending this weekend but then again that is why I am attending it

Now I’m not necessarily talking mega scared but doing something that you are unsure of and a bit afraid of is healthy and will help you to grow massively.

The growth is the key.

I always thought it was the stuff that you got but now I realise that it is actually what happens to you on the journey to achieving those goals that is the best part.

You have to learn about yourself and grow and do things that you never thought were possible in order to obtain those things that you have never had before.

I never knew that every time you go on a course or try out something new or make mistakes that you grow as a person, I had just chalked it up to experience.

Start today with something that scares you and you won’t even recognise yourself in 6 months never mind a few years down the road.

Liam Kearney Blog about the difference in outcomes between doing what you need and what you want

Liam Kearney Are You Doing What You Need to Do

Do you make it a habit of doing what you need to do?

Or do you just do what you want to do most of the time?

Most people will do what they want to do.

Just don’t expect us to believe that you are doing everything you can if you are only doing what you want to do….cos you are giving in to doing the easy thing.

Are you good at busy work or do you make a habit of doing what actually ‘needs’ to be done?

Just don’t expect things to change if you continue to do the things that you have done up until now because they won’t.

If you want different results than you have been getting then you are going to have to start doing things that are different than you have done before.

Make a habit of doing the things that need to be done and your life will change in ways that you could never have imagined.

You can apply this in any area of your life and make massive changes. I lost over two stone last year in a little over a month and have never put it back on. I made a habit of doing the things that needed to be done and have stuck to it since.

Before that I actually believed that I was doing everything that I could but I wasn’t. I was doing everything that I wanted to do but was not really committed and was not doing what I knew needed to be done.

What made the difference….commitment, awareness and making it a necessity and taking it one day at a time. Not really that difficult when you try it. Most people never will,

Create that habit today.

Liam Kearney Blog about how your work ethic will effect what you get from life

Do You Have a Bad Work Ethic

Some people spend so much time looking for the one thing that will make the difference….

The one silver bullet that will make you successful…

Do you want to know what it is…..A really high work ethic. That will change your life.

Ask anybody is who is doing really well for themselves in any career and they will have worked harder than anyone else. They will tell you that what you put in is what you get out.

This is the truth…for everyone who is out there and expect things to happen overnight for themselves…..they may happen overnight after you have spend time learning and trying new things and working hard at that goal over a period of time.

There is no such thing as an overnight success. When we have an overnight success, it only appears that way. We don’t see the 5 or 10 years that the music artist has spent gigging in small places, events and parties. All we hear is the hype around it.

We look at someone who is at the top of their game and wish that we are there now but most people will not want to put in the work to get there. Someone who is standing on stage in front of a packed out room of people who have payed to hear them speak, has probably spent years travelling the country speaking to people for free just so they can get better at it and hone their craft.

Are you willing to put in that sort of work for 5 years so that you can live the life of your dreams after that?

Liam Kearney Blog about the power of sharing your goals with people so that it helps to keep you accountable

What Scares Me for 2014

I’m always telling people to go after what scares them and put their ideas out there….

So here are some of the things that scare me and they are now my goals for 2014

I have no idea how I will achieve some of them but I am going to give it everything I can and figure it out to make it a reality.

For some people they will have dreams and hopes and they will never tell a soul about them for fear of what other people think.

That is exactly why I am creating these videos so that I share my goals with you to keep me accountable and also so that I won’t let anyone say that I said I would do something and did not do it.

It’s a little scary but then again if a dream or goal or idea is big enough then you won’t mind looking a little silly on the way to achieving them.

Liam Kearney Blog about marketing

Are You Afraid of Your Marketing Standing Out

Are you marketing your business with success?

Or are you spending money on advertising and not really sure what you get back in return for it?

When you begin advertising or marketing, you will worry about playing by the rules and marketing to the largest number of people that you can find….more than likely.

You need to realize that marketing is a way to create and build relationships with people and that if you actually take a chance and put your beliefs out there, people will either like it or they won’t.

Your job as a marketer is to get rid of as many of those people that will not do business with you as fast and as cheaply as possible.

It is a different way of thinking

Liam Kearney Blog on the meaning that you give things

What Meaning Are You Giving Things

Say one day you get your dream job….

and you love it, it’s exciting and you love going to work every day….

..then after 2-3 years in the job you take all those things that you loved for granted and start to pick on the few things that you don’t like to focus on….Do you think this will improve your situation or make your situation worse?

Yeah that’s what I think too…..worse….but that is what I did

Have you ever gone in to a restaurant and there are 2-3 different waiters working there and you get a really good one. He is interested and attentive and human and cares about what he is doing. You can tell those people a mile off. It doesn’t matter what they do for a living, they will always stand out and you feel better for having met them.

This brings me around to what you concentrate on at work or in your job. Are you thinking about how much your contact with other people is affecting them or are you just stuck in the bad feeling that you have and feel like the world owes you a living.

It doesn’t and you get out what you put in.

We all have one of those friends who is always good fun and energetic and a good listener and we feel great when we spend time with them. Why can’t you be that person?

Liam Kearney Blogpost Are you doing what scares you

Are You Doing What Scares You

Are you practicing what you preach?

Are you giving advice to people and not doing it yourself?

If you want to lead, then you are going to have to get out of your comfort zone and do some of those things that scare you.

I want to lead, I want to be one of those people that other people will want to follow. I have always wanted that but I wasn’t committed to it because I couldn’t figure out how to do it.

I am now committed to lead, I’m not entirely sure how I will do it some days but I am sure that I want to lead and I am sure that I will do this.

For everyone that is out there that is scared about how they will lead people, there are so many other people out there that are looking for someone to follow and lead them. You can be that person. That excites me.

I want to lead people but more importantly I want to make a difference for some one else and that will get me through those days that I am not sure whether I am capable or not.

I booked myself onto a Landmark Forum course this week. It is on next month and one of the reasons that I am doing it is because I want to transform my life and see how exciting it can be. The other side of that is that because it will change my life, it means that the future is uncertain and there is a part of me that does not want that to happen because it wants to keep me comfortable and safe which are two ways of saying not excited and unfulfilled.

Looking for Approval

Liam KearneyAre you searching for Approval?

When you do something new, do you jump in with both feet and give it a go or do you spend lots of time trying to figure out the right way to do it?

I always thought that this way of doing things was the most efficient and most effective way because when you find the right way – everything flows so much easier.

The one big problem that this doesn’t take in to account is the amount of work in the ‘information finding’ stage or the possibility that what you try may not work for you in the end anyway.

We learn fastest by ‘doing’ things. It is through action that we learn. Good old fashioned trial and error.

It took me until I was 30 years old to figure this out. I am so happy that I did figure it out. The method no longer matters to me because I know that I can try new things and choose the one that suits me best at that time. There is not ‘right way’ of doing things. What works for you may not work for me. It is all choice.

  • I have spoken to so many people who spend so long trying to figure out the best way and they don’t realise that they are stuck in the analysis stage and aren’t actually making progress.

The one thing that I would suggest to anyone trying out something new, whether it is an online business or to build up an existing business, is to learn that it doesn’t have to be perfect the first time. You have a choice about everything and it is only failure if you give up. When it doesn’t go to plan, you have more information to make a better decision and keep going.

  • Successful people learn to embrace imperfection and mistakes. They learn these and get better at every attempt until they succeed.
  • Most people get stuck trying to figure out the ‘right way’ to do something and they spend so long doing this that when they actually try it and it doesn’t go to plan, they give up.
  • Remember that nobody ever became world class at anything on their first attempt so do not expect to be any different.

Take the first step and keep going.
